Skipper Michael Hunte welcomes Alec Stewart to Egham

1996 saw Egham’s Year of Achievement. All three Saturday sides won promotion from their Surrey Championship leagues and both Sunday sides won their Sunday League.
In addition the club received the County Sound ‘Team of the Year’ award at the Championship dinner.

One of the best things about the success of 1996 was the number of home grown players who represented the club.
The Colts section was started at Egham back in the early 1970s. Peter and John Clark used to use the butchers van to ferry the lads to games. It was hosed down most times before they got in.

Towards the end of the 70s Ray Denne took charge of the Colts section and it was under his tenure that it grew and blossomed. Ray managed the Colts section for over 20 years and also took on the role of Chairman of the Club.

In 1985 Ray together with the President James Warden set up an Under 11 and Under 13 league. These leagues are still contested today, with the finals taking place on the Egham ground at the beginning of September each year. Ray was active within the club right up until
his premature death in 1999 and the club owes him a big debt of gratitude for the hard work he put into the club.

The period through the 1980s was probably one of the most stable and
successful times the club has had in recent years with Ray as Chairman and his son Gary as first team Captain.

The Colts section has continued to thrive at Egham. One of the major problems is keeping talented youngsters at the club. In an effort to combat this, the club has recently introduced an elite academy aimed at recognizing talented youngsters and fast tracking them through to senior cricket.
As with a lot of clubs, we often talk about what might have been had
all the talented colts remained at the club and with current Surrey players Zafar Ansari and Matt Dunn as ex Colts maybe we have quite a strong case, but we certainly have noproblems with them moving on in that direction.

Our good relationship with the county also extends over quite a period. Surrey Club and Ground were regulars on the fixture card in the 70s and 80s. We were also asked to host 4 benefit games; for Monty Lynch, Ian Greig, David Ward and Alec Stewart. The Alec Stewart game famously ending in a tie when, with the scores level, Alec Stewart and the Surrey team invited all the youngsters watching to assist them in the field and the last few balls were played out with over 100 fielders on the pitch.
